Two Men Behind Bars After Gun Fired During Incident in Oil City

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – Two local men are facing charges after a gun was reportedly fired during an altercation in Oil City late last month.

Court documents indicate the Oil City Police Department filed criminal charges against 34-year-old Chad Calkins and 35-year-old Jeremiah Gibbs, both of Oil City.

According to a criminal complaint, around 11:20 p.m. on September 24, Oil City Police received a call from a resident on Plum Street who reported there were “a bunch” of juveniles fighting outside of her residence.

While police were en route to the scene, they received another call from another caller who also reported juveniles fighting and stated they heard a loud bang.

The complaint indicates officers were advised that a known juvenile had a firearm and had discharged a shot from it.

Police then spoke to the known juvenile and several other individuals.

According to the complaint, police discovered from the involved individuals that the reported shot had been fired by Chad Calkins, who reportedly shot a revolver into the ground.

Calkins was then taken into custody.

In an interview with police, Calkins reportedly stated he did have a firearm and had fired it at the ground to break up a fight. He told police that he heard there might have been a gun involved in the fight and stated that was why he brought a gun, as well. He also told the officers that while they were speaking to the other individuals, he had hidden the gun under a mattress in a camper belonging to Jeremiah Gibbs.

After speaking with Calkins, police went to the camper he had indicated to get the gun, but were unable to locate it. Police then contacted Gibbs, who reportedly stated Calkins had called him and told him that he placed the gun in his camper. Gibbs said that out of fear of getting into trouble, he then took the gun, went across the bridge and down Pump House Road, and threw the gun into the wood line.

The complaint notes officers were then able to locate the revolver on the hillside on Pump House Road.

Calkins was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish at 7:15 a.m. on September 25, on the following charges:

– Terroristic Threats With Intent To Terrorize Another, Misdemeanor 1
– Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Misdemeanor 2
– Conspiracy – Tamper With/Fabricate Physical Evidence, Misdemeanor 2

Unable to post $15,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Venango County Jail.

He was released on September 29 when his bail type was modified to unsecured.

Gibbs was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish at 10:00 a.m. on September 25, on the following charges:

– Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Misdemeanor 2
– Conspiracy – Tamper With/Fabricate Physical Evidence, Misdemeanor 2

Unable to post $15.000.00 monetary bail, he remains lodged in the Venango County Jail.

All of the above charges against both Calkins and Gibbs were waived for court on September 29 and have been transferred to the Venango County Court of Common Pleas.
