Clarion Track & Field: Shelly Jones Places in Discus, Highlights Second Day at PSAC Outdoor Championships

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Golden Eagle track & field team saw one athlete score on Saturday, and another set herself up for points on Sunday, as Clarion competed on the second day of the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Earning a spot on the scorer’s podium on Saturday was senior Shelly Jones, who took sixth place in the Discus on a rainy, dreary day at Seth Grove Stadium. Jones earned a spot in the finals with her second throw of the competition, tossing the implement a distance of 38.05m. That proved to be her best throw of the event by far and was good enough to hold up for sixth place overall.

Jones will wrap her championships participation on Sunday when she competes in the Shot Put.

The top finisher on the track on Saturday was Mackenzie Carver, who put herself into position to compete for the championship in the 800m by leading the field in the preliminary race. The senior mid-distance runner led the way with a time of 2:18.84, running one of the fastest second-lap splits in the race with a time of 1:12.60. The 800m finals are slated for Sunday afternoon.

Leah Perry wrapped up her Heptathlon on Saturday, finishing 12th overall in the field. She started things off by clearing a distance of 4.58m in the Long Jump, which ranked 13th among the competitors in the field. Her Javelin throw of 20.54m was 12th, and she concluded things with a time of 2:46.05 in the 800m, which was also 12th.

Perry also competed in the open 100m Hurdles on Saturday. The junior took 18th with a time of 16.22.

Rounding out things on the track was Paige Brewer, who made her debut at the PSAC Outdoor Championships by competing in the 3000m Steeplechase. Brewer completed the difficult circuit with the time of her season (and career), setting a new PR with a time of 12:19.62.
