Indiana County Man Sentenced to State Prison in Domestic Assault Case

INDIANA CO., Pa. (EYT) – An area man has been sentenced to up to five years in state prison on charges related to a domestic assault.

District Attorney Bob Manzi announced on Monday that defendant Edward J. Barnosky, Jr., of Cherry Tree, was sentenced to serve 2 to 5 years in a state correctional facility after a guilty plea to the charge of strangulation, a felony of the second degree. Barnosky is not eligible for early parole programs and was ordered to restitution to the victim on top of fines and costs.

The charges stemmed from an incident that took place on June 11, 2020, when members of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop A, Indiana Barracks were called to a report of a domestic assault. The victim fled the scene to seek help at the Cherry Tree Fire Department.

Police say the investigation found that the defendant tried to choke the victim before she was able to fight him off.

“Domestic violence is NEVER acceptable. We have a victim in this matter that should be praised for her bravery in standing strong against this defendant. Without a victim being ready to take the stand and testify, we are unable to hold a defendant accountable for what they did,” Manzi said.

“The members of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop A, Indiana Barracks did a fantastic job in responding to this scene quickly, thoroughly investigating it and bringing a strong case against this defendant.”

“If you or a loved one is the victim of domestic violence, please know that the Indiana County District Attorney’s Office, every police department in this county and our victim advocates are here to help you” Manzi added.

If there is an active assault occurring, please call 911.

In a non-emergency, you can call the District Attorney’s Office at 724.465.3835, your local police department, or the Alice Paul House at 724-349-4444.
