James R. Overly, Sr.

James R. Overly, Sr., 85, of Punxsutawney, died Monday, March 11, 2024, at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born September 17, 1938, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Mary Loretta (Schneider) and James Luther Overly.

On August 16, 1957, he married Erda “Carol” (Simons) Overly, who survives.

Jim was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church of Punxsutawney.

He sang in the choir and was a lector for Mass.

He enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical, singing and whistling and making up his own songs, and watching TV.

Jim worked as a mechanic and laborer for Grange Lime and Stone and formerly worked for Thomas Coal Company as a mechanic on their water pumps.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, daughter Mary Beth Bosak and husband Rick of Punxsutawney, son J.R. Overly and wife Ellen of Punxsutawney, daughter Debbie George and husband Mark of DuBois, son Bill Overly and wife Jen of Punxsutawney, son Don Overly and husband Louis Mitchell of Ringwood, NJ, and daughter Patti Dinsmore and husband Robert of Punxsutawney; ten grandchildren, Erin, Chelsea, James, Jeff, Geoff, Amber, Becky, Carol, Jackson, and Andrew “A.J.”; seven great-grandchildren, Mason and Colton, Harper and Sydney, Deegan, and Ivy and Fiona; a sister Patricia Massi and husband Bill of New Kensington; a sister-in-law Suzann Simons of New Kensington; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson Cory George and a brother John “Jack” Overly.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at SS.C.D. church with Monsignor Joseph Riccardo officiating.

Interment will be in the columbarium at Calvary Cemetery.
