Dr. Janice Dunkle, DO, at Laurel Eye Clinic Urges Caution and Proper Eye Protection During Solar Eclipse

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – As the 2024 total solar eclipse approaches, it’s essential to prioritize eye safety.

The moon’s passage in front of the sun will create a breathtaking celestial event, but without proper precautions, it can also lead to serious eye damage. At Laurel Eye Clinic in Brookville, they’re committed to ensuring your eye health during this remarkable phenomenon.

Eye Safety Tips for the Solar Eclipse:

Use Approved Eye Protection: Ordinary sunglasses are inadequate. Only use ISO 12312-2 certified solar filters found in “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers. These filters protect your retina from permanent damage.

Inspect Your Filters: Before the eclipse, carefully examine your solar filter or eclipse glasses. If you notice any scratches or damage, do not use them.

Read Instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for using eclipse glasses or handheld viewers. Teach children how to use them correctly.

Cover Your Eyes First: Before looking at the sun, stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer. Afterward, turn away and remove the filter—never remove it while looking at the sun.

Dr. Janice Dunkle, DO, states “Solar retinopathy is damage to the retina, the inside lining of the eye, that occurs from sun gazing, using laser pointers, welding, or eclipse viewing. Unfortunately, it can result in a center blind spot or distortion in your central vision that may or may not improve. Solar retinopathy symptoms usually start within a few hours of the injury. It is important to see your optometrist or ophthalmologist to determine the extent of injury. A dilated exam and a retinal photograph will be taken to aid in the diagnosis. The best way to protect yourself from solar retinopathy is to not look directly at the source of light unless you have proper eye protection. There is no treatment available for solar retinopathy, although some patients do recover their vision slowly over 3-6 months. It is safe to watch the eclipse with approved filtered glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard. Never sun gaze without proper eye protection!”

If you suspect you’re experiencing symptoms of solar retinopathy, we strongly recommend visiting Laurel Eye Clinic for a thorough evaluation. Our experienced ophthalmologists can assess your condition and provide personalized guidance to safeguard your vision.
