Five Clarion Wrestlers Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND, OH — The Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced their 2023-24 Academic All-MAC team in the sport of wrestling this week.

Clarion boasted five athletes on this year’s team, highlighting the academic and athletic success of the program this year.

Eli Brinsky, TJ England, Joey Fischer, Ethan Wiant, and John Worthing were all recognized.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Brinsky (3.97 – Nutrition & Fitness) wrapped his Golden Eagle wrestling career by earning a permanent spot in the starting lineup, going 9-12 overall. He caught fire midway through the season, winning six of his last seven dual matches, including a win by fall over Long Island’s James Johnston.

England (3.94 – Marketing & Management) earned a spot in the Clarion starting lineup early in the year, finishing with a 9-14 overall record in 2023-24. The junior was an important part of a number of dual wins, including a 3-0 run during a quad with Kent State, Long Island and Morgan State.

Fischer (3.24 – Marking and Management) tied his career-high with 18 wins in 2023-24, and took sixth place in the MAC Championships at 125 pounds. The highlight of his year came in early February when he defeated Lock Haven’s Anthony Noto by 9-6 decision at Thomas Fieldhouse. Noto went on to take third place at this year’s NCAA Championships.

Wiant (3.61 – Nutrition & Fitness) was the Golden Eagles’ year-long starter at 197 pounds and closed his season with a pair of wins at the MAC Championships in the consolation bracket. The junior was part of a couple of conference dual wins this year, contributing directly to victories over George Mason and Bloomsburg.

Worthing (3.47 – Early Childhood Education) placed third in the MAC at 174 pounds this year, coming up just one win shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second time in his college career. He went 19-10 overall and won 9 of his last 11 matches, including six matches with bonus points.
